If one has all of the pullers, tools (pullers, presses), and parts, how hard is it to really rebuilt a lower unit?

What would you say is the biggest thing to watch out for? Is there a easy to use tool one can make to pressure test after seals are installed?

For some reason i get the impression it's not as hard as led to believe. I could probably rebuild one faster than trying to find a used good one on craigslist or a junkyard.

Thoughts folks? I have a 78 V4 gearcase that lost forward gears (only reverse) and thinking about pulling it apart.

As COFE says get the manual. Hardest part is breaking the pinion nut. I used a groung down 7/8 wrench. Also when pulling drive shaft watch the needle bearrings they sit loosly and will drop out. Also the cup has needle bearings. The manuall will tell you the count for each one and how to re-install. I have rebuilt 3 units so far and its not hard just time consuming. If you look on my site there are pics of a lower unti stand I designed. It works great and easy to move. Good luck and get that manual

Got lucky and found a much newer unit to hang on my older 150. Mechanic said if a bearing spun in the housing, you are screwed. guess you would have to take it all apart and clean everything to find out. You are right about finding a good/used one. Crapshoot there.

Get the OEM factory service manual. It will show everthing step by step and what tools you will need.
