It's easy with enough equipment and time. You pull the outdrive, disconnect battey first then hoses, wiring as needed, Motor mounts. Then fly the engine out of the hole. I've only done it once and I'm no expert.

What is the boat you are working on?

Re: Rebuilding motor.

Rent a forklift for removal & install? I had to use a fork to get the bottom of the oil pan to 7' plus to clear the aft railing.

Re: Rebuilding motor.

JasonGS,

There are several ways to do this. I have been exploring the various options myself because I will need to replace my GM 350 motor very soon. You could rent one of those really tall engine hoists:

Or you could build a simple wooden gantry and buy a cheapo 1 ton chain hoist:

You could also talk with a local marina about how much it would cost them just to hoist the motor out and set it in the back of your truck. I think I am personally going to go with the gantry option. You can buy 1 ton chain hoists on ebay brand new for about $35 bucks and the lumber and hardware to build the gantry only costs about $70. This way I can take my time and do everything from the comfort of my own property.

Re: Rebuilding motor.

What kind of cost am I looking at to do a compete rebuild minus heads since they are brand new along with carburetor being rebuilt already. I will be doing most the work myself minus machine work.

Im not very well versed with this. But you should be able to get a remanufactured marine short block for around $800. If you want to completely build the motor yourself I suggest you call a machine shop to see what it would cost to get the block ready for you to throw everything on it. Then price out all the various parts. This all of course depends on whether or not your block is still good. No way to know that until it is stripped down, hot tanked, pressure tested and magnafluxed.

I looked into the cam that was mentioned in the article and it seems I have build up the heads so that it can take it.. The heads are around 2 weeks old not trying to get them redone just so I can put the cam in.. Any other suggestions???

WHOA pay the extra and let the one that is doing the machine work build your short block for you. A lot cheaper to get it done right the first time and even have some kind of guarantee. Too many things that can go wrong for a first timer. Just a word of caution...

This isn't my first motor its my first boat motor... I just need to know what parts are suggested. I know most parts are the same as a car but people have done boat motors and know what parts are good and what's not..
