Rebuilding Yamaha 90HP lower unit- need help

I had to replace my propellar shaft due to bend. When I went to put the unit back together, I could not easily tell which way the clutch dog went back on. I have a shop manual which says it can go on either way, which is bogus since the dog obviously larger on one side than the other. The is also an "F" stamped on the clutch dog and an "F" stamped on the shift cam. Can anyone help me on how to put this back together? Should it turn easily if I put the unit into neutral? Any help would be greatly appreciated. You can even email me with photos or info if you would at donnenh@gmail.com.
Thanks

F means forward gear
forward gear is the furthest away from prop
