Rebuilt carb, runs great except for .......

At the end of last season, I did a bunch of work to the boat, including rebuilding the carb. It's a 96 Bayliner with the 350 2bbl. It fires up great when cold, and struggles to fire when warm. I'm thinking I need to fine tune the choke??? Also, when I put it into gear it wants to die, so I have to jam it in and go to eliminate that, it also dies when I put it into neutral. So, I'm thinking I need to adjust the other cables that attach to the carb throttle.

So, my question is, how do I adjust it, should I turn it in or out? Any clues would be great.

Thanks again.

I would start by redoing the carb rebuild. Most common job not done right the first time. So don't feel like you're being picked on. It takes a ton of care to make sure every passageway is perfectly clean. You either run a wire or a fishing line through them, then spray through every one. Make sure the float level is exactly to spec. And if there was dirty fuel in the system that caused the original problem, unless you addressed that, it is still there causing more. Pull your filters and pour into a clear container to check for cloudiness and debris.

When you tighten an electric choke, CW, it increases duration of choke. You need to loosen, CCW, to have less choke. Loosen too far and you effectively remove cold choking. I like to initially set my choke with a cold engine by turning until the choke is all the way off, then turning CW until the choke plate just hits full, then I back off until the choke is 3/16 or so from fully closed. I test it over time. I can always pump the throttle a couple times to dump raw fuel in to cold start via the throttle pump. If the engine needs more or less I adjust from there.

You know, I forgot to mention that the going into gear behavior could be from a sticky lower shift cable. tunaboss should have someone keep an eye on the shift interrupt switch to see if it is activating and killing the motor when shifting.

Thanks for the input, I'm pretty confident the carb rebuild is good, it isn't my 1st rebuild. I guess I'll play with the choke a bit more to see if I can dial it in.

What about the shift interrupt switch, where is it, and how do I check it.

Thanks again.

Yeah, pretty much everyone says that at one time or another. It is still the most repeated repair.

Here's a good thread describing how the interrupt works in the Adults Only section where you can find a lot of guides to working on your sterndrive.
