I rebuilt (cleaned) the carbs on my '89 88spl rude. They seemed to be in good shape except for the jets on the top carb. The jets that were clogged were the ones inside the throat on the top of the carb (had what almost looked like candle wax in them). It started up in the driveway just fine, will test on boat tomorrow. Does anyone know what these jets are for specifically? Hope this solves my problem with fouled plugs.

Those are idle air jets. Make sure you used the correct gasket under the top plate. It should not be a solid gasket. <br /><br />Good luck!

Jets on the top???? The "standard" set up is with a main jet on the bottom and a needle valve float assembly. The smaller passages are low speed idle circuits. That wax you mention is old varnished gas/oil mix and it will clog everything.<br /><br />Good luck on running it in the open water. Make sure your gaskets are tight and you are using fresh gas/oil. Sometime in the future you should also consider rebuilding the fuel pump which will also have deposits in there.<br /><br />Bob<br /><br />Good morning!! DHadley

Re: Rebuilt Carbs on '89 88HP 'Rude

it was an omc kit.......hope it was the right gasket. The kit came with many parts that I did not use. The only parts I used were the float, seat, valve, o-rings under screws on side of bowl and some gaskets. It was more of a cleaning than anything else. Under the bowl were, what looked like 2 pressed in covers, there were new ones in the kit. I didn't want to fool around with this, what is it for?

It may save a bunch of time to pop the top plate off and check the gasket. The gasket will look almost like an "H" and should have slots cut out in the "legs" of the "H". <br /><br />Good Morning Bob_VT!<br /><br />Good luck!

Dhadley, the gasket is correct, will clearing these jets help the problem with the fouled plugs? Also, before this carb cleaning, the engine would sometimes 'sneeze' when started after sitting for a few minutes.

Sneezing is an indication of a lean condition at idle. Cleaning the carbs may or may not cure the problem. The clogged air jets on the top carb should have made it rich at idle on the top 2 cylinders. Sneezing can come from other areas like a throttle plate slightly open. Or pulling in air from some other place. <br /><br />Were the plugs loading up and fouling at idle? Which ones (all or top 2 or one side)? What spark plugs (and PLEASE dont say "the right ones" - tell us which ones)?<br /><br />Good luck!

The plugs are Champion L77JC4's. I can't tell when the plugs are fouling (at idle or at speed). 3 out of the 4 plugs were wet when I took them out, the bottom port plug seemed to be drier.

If the port bottom plug is dry and clean, you may have the same problen I did with the power head to midsection gasket being messed up. Mine was pulling water into the bottom port cylinder. That plug was clean and dry, with the others oily and black. That big flat plate between the cylinder banks is easy to remove(there are actually two, an inner plate covering the exhaust side of both cylinder banks and an outer plate which acts as a water jacket. When I pulled mine there was a heavy buildup of carbon in the upper section of the port side and the whole starboard side. The bottom of the port side was much cleaner indicating evidence of water in that area near the exhaust ports of #4 cylinder.<br />It may turn out ok but it is still an easy check and good maintenance.

The plug was dry.....not clean. Does this make a difference?

FreeBeeTony: <br />"I boat tested the '89 88hp 'Rude today after the carb rebuild (cleaning). To my disappointment I still had a miss at the mid range, then it clears out. I am now wondering if it has something to do with the sync? If it runs good at WOT can the sync still be off? I don't have a tach but it seems fine at WOT. Any ideas?"<br />----------------------------------<br />One to start with: keep all info in the same post or we all are lost. I hope that is ok.<br />----------------------------------

I thought it would be more noticable if I started a new thread. Sometimes it seems like the older ones get lost in the noise.......<br /><br />So, any ideas on my continuing problem?

If not you might have to do that. Inlcuding the carbs. Again.

I opened the fuel pump and it is clean. I recently read another post regarding an intermittent problem with one or two cyl;inders not firing. It talks about a DVA test of the stator Can someone elaborate on this test? I have looked at the site for instructions but they are vauge.
