Hey all, I have a 1974 mercury 850, It was having trouble starting and when I did get it started It would stall as soon as i put it in gear. I took it to a shop and supposedly had the "#1 mercury guy in the area" work on it, He completely tore down the carbs and rebuilt them. Well I just got it back and It is still hard to start but it does shift great once it is going. But the main probleme is once i get it running I can shut it off for about a half hour and It will be a pain to start again, Before I had it worked on once I got it started it would start and run fine the rest of the day. I called the mechanic and he said it sounds like something electrical like cap or wires, I am not able to bring it back to this guy to have him work on it because we are taking it on a fishing trip for a week and leaving on saturday, and there is no way the would get to look at it before then so you guys have any idas?? Oh Yeah the plugs are new. could the cap or plugs cause this?

My choke is working but once i have it running and shut it off for about a half hour i shouldn't have to use it right? When the motor is cold I usally just prime the bulb and raise the idle half way and hit the choke a few times and turn the key, It used to start right up and once I had it running i could start it right up just by turning the key. now it can sit for a half hour or so and It's a pain to get it started again.

my '70 1150 is kinda cold hearted, but not that
bad. here's 2 things to check:
1) are butterflys closing all the way when choked?
2)is it flooding? fuel pourin outa front/carb?
have had a sticky float make it real tuff...
good luck,
M.Y.

Thank you my fellow Rochestarian :) Not sure about the butterfly's, I'll have to check when I get out of work. Since my mechanic assured me it was not the carbs I figured he was right even though my gut told me it was the carbs. I think I might squirt some premix in and see if that helps and if so check the fuel pump.

actually on the other side of Albion, but nobody's
ever heard of Knowlesville! LOL
good start... pump kits are cheap and easy to
replace on them. also check the quick connect
and try a new primer bulb if you can.
good luck,
M.Y.

in your post you said you hit the chock 3 or 4 times . you should hold the chock in while you are cranking .

Re: rebuilt carbs still trouble starting on merc 850

Thanks again for all the help guys, I think I fixed the problem, or at least a way to deal with it. It guess I wasn't priming it enough, i used to squeeze the bulb about 5 times so i tried to pump it about 10 times even though it was hard after about 5 when i did this i started right up. I don't know why this changed because of the carb rebuild but for some reason it worked, The hose and bulb are only a month old so I am thinking I might get a fuel pump rebuild kit, but at least i figured out how to start it if I'm stuck out on the water. Thanks again for all your help guys.
