Well got the rebuilt powerhead on and running. Now I have a problem that the rebuilder says isn't that important but I think it will cause problems in the long run.

The origional powerhead was a 89' 125 with the large flat cyl head. The rebuild powerhead that I recieved I believe is a newer design and may be a 120HP (will pull the only numbers I could find which were on the top of the exhaust cover)? It has a much smaller head (not as wide) with cooling fins on it. It looks like there is the actual head and then a cover for it (the part with the fins on it).

Well the problem is that water squirts/runs/streams out around the lowest spark plug hole. I spoke with the rebuilder and he say's it's not that important but will reimburse me for parts and labor to have it fixed. He did have me re-tourque the head bolts which I did. He also said to tighten the small bolts to the left of each spark plug. These bolts don't seem to tighten maybe they are stripped and that is why it is leaking water. I did run the boat Saturday for 3 hours and it ran great and the powerhead was only warm to the touch the whole time.

In short should I just get a new head gasket and a gasket for the cylhead cover and what the heck do the small bolts to the left of each spark plug do?

Sorry for the long post and thanks for all your anwsers guys!!

Loran

The small bolts will connect the waterjacket cover to the Head. If they are loose they may let water through...or cause the waterjacket gasket to fail. It should be replaced.

TMD

TMD thanks for the info. I would imagine that there is a nut that is turning on the other side of that cover and that is why the small bolts won't tighten? It looks like RTV or something simillar was used on the water jacket cover instead of a gasket....

Here is the number I found on the top of the exhaust cover: 044A3004 Does this help identify the year and model of the powerhead?

Thanks!

No I do not believe that number will help much. If its a 125hp it will be 1989 and under. If it is a 120hp it will be 1990 and up.

There are no nuts in behind the bolts. They thread into the head.

TMD

There is no gasket between the head and the water jacket cover just silicone. remove the head and the water jacket cover install four helicoils and put the head and water jacket back together with a new head gasket and resilicone between the cover and the head this will solve you problem. good luck, bret

If you need further assistance please email me @ forcepower01@yahoo.com. thanks,Bret

Thanks for the description. I will have the rebuilder send a new headgasket and get this fixed up.
