Rebuilt Water Pump now a little problem

I figured that I would post a new topic, since this is a new problem. I received the parts for my waterpump, and put it together and re-installed onto the motor. Now I have a bit of a problem. When I was putting the bottom half of the pump on, I re-used the o-ring. I noticed that the diameter on the new housing was slightly smaller than that of the new one, and as such the o-ring was a little loose. I filled the gearcase with oil, put the motor in a barrel and let it run for about 5 min. The pump is working fine. Put it in gear both forward and reverse, everything works properly. Took it out of the barrel and opened the vent plug, and grey oil came out. Opened the botom plug, and the oil turned to a bit of a green, not brown like it had been. So my question, do you think that water is leaking around the o-ring? Should I take it apart and maybe re-use the old one (even though it is slightly melted under the steel plate). Try a different o-ring? Or maybe wait until the first time we take it out, and after we are done, check the oil then?
Thanks in advance for any help.

If the oil is green, water didn't color it ,did you add high preformance geat oil, it's green in color

The oil was a light brown going in. Not sure, but I think there may be some water in it, or it could be just mixing with what little remained of the old oil. May undo the plug today and change the oil and try again. Would it hurt anything if I just tried it like that first time out for the day and then checked it once we got back?

After running let it sit (in a warm place)a day or two before checking. That will let any water settle out and be immediately visible upon draining.

I have been thinking on it a bit, and I am thinking that if indeed there is water in there, it is more than likely coming from around the water pump and that o-ring. I am thinking that if I replace that o-ring, what would it hurt to put some high temp silicone around there? Then at lease I can be sure that no water will leak around that point. Does this sonud reasonable, or is there some reason why I shouldn't do it?

Found problem,
Wrong lower water pump housing. Need different part number. I have cleaned up the old one, and am going to re-use. Thanks
