Hello everyone my carpet in my Bayliner is looking bad to the point I feel I need to tear it up and replace it.

So my question is what's the right way to tear up the carpet on the deck.do I want to keep it whole so I can use the pattern to cut new carpet?
Next what do I use to clean the deck of the boat from the dry glue?

Also can I put something on the deck that would make it more like a fishing boat that is white none skid or must I recarpet.

just seems recarpeting doesn't last long

any suggestions thanks again

I agree. Rip out the carpet and put down a no skid paint. If your carpet is like the stuff that was in my bayliner, it should come out really easily.

Don't do the carpet!

Sure clean up the old stuff and put down some interlux interdeck or like product- paint made for decks with non skid in it or you can paint it and then mix some nonskid additive to the paint and roll it on after masking some. Gives it a real pro look.

Nows a good time to check the sole/deck out for rot.

What's becomming popular now is to either non-skid (best) or use Marine Vinyl. Once you have that down, go buy a good Marine Carpet, cut it to fit, bind the edges and install snaps. This way, you can have carpet for the midnight dance cruises and take it out for fishing. Nice part is that you can take it out and let it dry if it gets wet.

anyone have any specified brand recommendations for as far as...cheapest/best value? I'm seeing anywhere from 13+ per square foot (says linear foot). My boat isn't worth hundreds of dollars worth of vinyl. :(

Linear foot is different from square foot. It's linear foot off the roll, which could be 5, 6, or 8 feet long, etc. I bought some indoor/outdoor carpeting a couple years ago and it was priced by the linear foot, but the roll was 10 feet long!

I'd say double-check your prices. Keep us posted!

Well, this is the 3rd time I've tried to reply again. I hope it "sticks" this time. Dunno what was up with the board last night.

The BassPro website shows the roll length to be 8 feet, so that's $13.99 for 8 square feet, or linear roll foot.

There are even better deals out there on the 'net. Try eBay too.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi there,
I am in the process of restoring two boats and have purchased a lot of marine vinyl. I bought it all at Jo-Ann fabrics, my wife is on their mailing list so I get a lot of 50% off coupons that make the marine vinyl cheap. The stuff they have is good marine grade vinyl, stretches nice and after 2 years in the elements is just like new.
I was just there Monday night and everything was 40-50% off anyways, so no coupon needed. They even had 40% off special order sunbrella.
I don't remember exactly what I paid but it was the cheapest by far.

Good luck
hope you have a jo-ann in your area!

okay I get what your saying now, 1 linear foot long but as wide as the roll is. 8 feet would be superb. I'll try ebay too. I know we have a Jo-Ann around here as well somewhere. I thought that was some artsy crafts place

Yeah the marine vinyl is regularly $9.99/yard, and the rolls are 54" wide, so I think I paid $5.00/per lineal yard. They have a handful of different colors too.
Not bad

I guess I'm going to have to go to the store. i didnt see anything on the website. Is the vinyl thick enough to put over plywood?
I went to BassProShop and they didnt have ANYTHING at the store, so I grabbed a sample of the best outdoor carpet at Home Depot but its...nothing to be proud of.

Most retailers sell the marine deck vinyl by the LINEAR yard. The rolls are either 54 or 72 inches wide. So depending on what size roll the retailer carries, depends on how many square yards of material you get for your linear yard price.

Here is a retailer that sells deco dot on 72" wide rolls for $20.99 per linear yard. That comes to about $10.50 per square yard.

They also have the regular Deco deck vinyl for about $18 per linear yard.

Marideck is often cheaper, sometimes about half the price of Nautolex, even though they are comparable weight per sq/yr. Just be aware that the 8-1/2 foot extra wide roll of Marideck is actually two rolls seamed together. This is usually used for pontoon boats with some serious acreage to cover.

The vinyl is nice stuff, it is stretchy so you can get the wrinkles out as well. I have used it to go over plywood, moisture resistant mdf, and plywood covered in foam.
They even have that whisper stuff like they use on the interiors of new cruisers, I used about 25 yards of the stuff on my 30'.

For flooring, I guess you'll just have to decide for yourself, it may not be durable enough for heavy foot traffic. But for side panels, it's really durable and mildew reisitant.

Rob, what is the "whisper" product you mention? Have a link to it?

Do I understand you correctly that you put upholstry vinyl on the deck of your boat? Maybe I'm just confused. ...

Re: Recarpet my Bayliner YES OR NO?

I think he's refering to something similar to what I got. I bought mine through Cabela's. When I got it I said no way, this isn't the vinyl I wanted.
The stuff has a cloth back just like upholstery vinly but the surface material is like regular vinyl only thinner and more flexible.

I glued some down to a piece of scrap wood and tested it. I scuffed it, drop a piece of 1" pipe on it. Got sand on my shoes and rubbed it in, etc. Much to my suprise it holds up very, very well. I think the fact that the cloth back is glued down allows the vinyl to move a little rather than being rigid and that adds tear and scuff resistance.

I've already started putting some of it on and I'm very happy with both the workability of the product and the appearance. The only thing I would be cautious about is substrate imperfections. I think they would show through as dips and dents.

.......

.

Yeah, both the Nautolex and Marideck deck vinyl has cloth backing. But its not upholstry vinyl.

I have samples of Marideck and Nautolex Decodot and neither are very stretchy at all. Maybe because they are small samples.

I don't know if mine is Nautolex or not, I suspect it is. It doesn't really stretch like naugahyde upholstery vinyl but it forms nicely.
