35 hp Johnson starter bolt stripped, drilled out and put in a 5/16 bolt but it pulled the started too tight to the flywheel. So tapped it out and put in a helicoil, now the helicoil is failing. Any recommendations? There are several thick wall stainless inserts that look like they will do the job, but would like to hear pros and cons of someone that has some experience and recommendations.

Go to fastenall And ask them for a timecert, that will do it!

I read up on timecerts earlier today and like the way they looked. Can you drill the holes for the time cert free handed with a electric drill, they showed the holes being drilled with the piece mounted and the hole being drilled by a drill press. I may have to look at the thick wall time cert.

I have free handed time-certs in the past. If at all possible I have used a drill press. But in your case I don't think that would be an option. Just go slow and take your time. Cutting fluid helps greatly..

Thanks for the advice, I am going out to our local fastner company here tomorrow and see what I can buy.

A small trick for you and I hope you read this before you start drilling. Keep a lot of heavy grease on drill bit. Drill as straight as you can, and go ssllooww! Most of the shavings will stick to it. Also use it on counter sink, NOTE: Use a good locktite between timecert and housing, use it sparingly. allow to cure for 24hrs before use. Good luck and post results.

I wished you had tried shim washers to move the starter away from flywheel when you had the 5/16 bolt working.
