Hi all,

I used to have this little pump to inflate my boat to probably 80% then finished up with hand pump. This worked great, but one drop and the unit is dead. My boat it Intex Mariner 4, which is very low pressure boat.

Amazon.com: Intex 12 Volt D/C Electric Pump: Sports & Outdoors

Now I was about to pick up a pump operated by 4 D batteries.

Amazon.com: Coleman 4D Universal Quick Pump, Colors May Vary: Clothing

However, I was reading some reviews and realized folks use it for mattress and became unsure if it is a good choice for a boat or not.

What do you have that you can recommend?

I use an air mattress inflator every time I inflate my 9 ft SIB, and top off with the foot pump. The air mattress inflator also makes short work of deflating the boat for storage in the winter. I also use it for my air mattresses :D

Mine is a Coleman as well, but mine only works with AC power, so my only limitation is I need electricity to run it. I see they make rechargeable air mattress inflators now too.

What makes the air mattress pumps great is they are high volume, low pressure pumps. The thing to avoid is using an air compressor. I know it can be done is used VERY carefully, but it is really easy to blow out a tube or tube seam with compressed air.

Thanks, jrs_diesel for your input.

Last night I actually went to a sporting goods store. They had the Intex DC 12 v pump that I used to have. They also had the twin brother of the pump which uses 6 C batteries. I picked this one up and figure that would be handy that I can use anywhere.

Wrong! Even this unit looks almost the same, the amount of air pumps out was far less. I couldn't get my boat even start pumping. I'm taking this back tomorrow and getting the 12 V. I guess depending on the voltage, the wattage is different there for amount of air / pressure it can output. Good thing I bought from a local store.

Inflators that uses standard C & D batteries inflates at very low pressure. 12 V inflators outputs higher pressure compared to.

A friend of mine uses a shop vac from home depot ($30) blows up the boat super fast. All you do is move the nozzle from suck air to push air.
