Recommendations for a Fish N Ski Boat...

I've got a project boat...an old 1978 19' Baja Bowrider (dual console/walk thru ski boat) with a 1750 Merc Black Max . The engine works fine but the boat's deck (and mostly likely the stringers) need to be replaced. My original thought was to re-build the deck to make the interior more suitable for fishing. As satisfying as the thought of re-doing the boat might be, my second thought was to forego the re-build and just purchase a used fishing boat (without the engine) and use the Black Max 1750. (That way I could be enjoying a boat on the water. I can work on the project boat during the off season).

I was thinking of a 16'-19' fishing boat, but 175 HP seems like a lot of engine (weight and power) for a primarily interior lake fishing boat that would generally be carrying two people and fishing gear. However, that kind of horsepower would provide the option of being able to do some ski-ing. I've read many threads on this forum regarding the relative quality of different boat manufacturers... and a thread probably exists on this subject, but I have not yet run across THE thread dealing with recommended fish-n-ski boats.

Does anyone have an opinion/experienced problems and/or have a recommendation for any given boat manufacturer that caters to the fish and ski crowd (versus the ski and fish crowd)? If I purchase used, is/are there manufacturer(s) that I should stay away from? Forgive me if I'm raising a question that's been answered a zillion times before.

Personaly my 96 Crestliner caters very well to the fishing side. It has a livewell, casting platform in the bow, electric trolling motor. The bow converts to a regular open bow by folding up the side seats or a very flat stable bass boat style bow. There are many more out there I just have first hand experience with my Crestliner.

the 2008 205 Bayliner is the boat to beat for a fish n ski. all the fishing attachments, pesidtal seats, etc, have their on storage compartments. you can go to the ramp in the morning, fish, then the family join you, the fish stuff gets store, and it turns into a ski. no storing stuff in the garage, back of the truck. comes with the motor guide wireless motor. 4.3 5.0 available, no outboards.

Thanks RNDN. I'm not familiar with Crestliner, but I'll definitely take a hard look at them.

I was hoping to utilize the 1750 Mercury Black Max, which is an outboard. Anything similar to the Bayliner that can accommodate an outboard?

KCook:

Thanks for the threads. I am considering both. I was thinking the 1750 Merc Black Max might be a bit big for the lighter aluminum boats, though.

I'm not familiar with the 1750 Black Max. But so long as it's an outboard, there are aluminum fish-n-ski boats over 18' that can take it.

If you are not familiar with Crestliner, here is a Crestliner 1750 Sport Fish. Very comfortable family/fishing boat. Crestliner has been around for years.

Silvertip. Thanks for the photo. I have certainly heard of the Crestliner brand, it's just that I've never had the pleasure of riding in one. I appreciate the photo and will definitely take a close look at this line. FYI, I'm leaning towards a deeper V hull design.
