I'm looking to make a trip to either of these places this summer and need some recommendations on a good boat trip.
I have a 19' glastron open bow so no facilities to stay overnite on boat. I want to either find a cabin I can boat to and stay there or get a place on the water for a few days.
Are there places that have these accomodations? Maybe even find a small cottage with a dock would be nice too. I live in WNY so the drive wouldn't be too bad and I thought this would make a nice little vacation.

I was even considering something around the finger lakes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm heading up to the Saranac Lakes region this July. You can access 4 different lakes and several miles of river from Saranac Lake using 3 locks in the rivers. The largest of the lakes Lower Saranac Lake if just about totally a NYS Park. Many of the islands in this lake are actually camping spots for tent camping, but there are also many fine cottages, B&B's, and resorts available. If you're interested in more details of the region, feel free to private message me and I'll try to give you the contact information I've compiled over the last several months prior to making my reservations. I also happen to know the cottage I'm renting still has several weeks available, although I have yet to stay there myself, it came with very high praises from previous renters.

Don't know if you made your trip yet but they are both beautiful place to boat. But, before you head to either one make sure you have camping/motel reservations before you go. They fill up real fast. The Thousand Is. in my opinion is the premiere boating destination. Absolutely beautiful with enough scenery to make your eyes pop. A few years ago a buddy of mine slipped his boat in Clayton & we frequently made a run from there to Kingston, Ont. & back. But, I will tell you now if you go there you better have charts. For one thing if you get out of the main channel & you don't know what you're doing you can quickly go from 40 ft. of water & the next minute be on the rocks. I'm not kidding. You will also have to look out for ocean going tankers heading in both directions. Give then plenty of room. Also, they don't call it the Thousand Islands for nothing. You can quickly get lost if you don't know what you doing. There are hundreds of bays, inlets, etc. that can make you feel like you're in a maze if you get off the main channel. Be prepared to deal with some heavy chop on a windy day. The fishing is excellent, especially for bass. If you plan to fish, don't end up on the Canadian side without a fishing license. If you do & get caught by the man they will confiscate your boat, your wife & kids & whatever else you have on board & you can kiss them goodbye. They don't mess around. If I were you I would launch in either Clayton or Alexandria Bay. The Thousand Is. area is definetly worth the trip.
Now, Lake George. Another premiere spot. Beautiful lake. Beautiful area. I've never boated there, but I have visited many times. Don't go without accomodations lined up or you'll be sleeping in your vehicle. Check out Schroon Valley Resort if you want to camp. They have a website. Nice place right on the Schroon River & 15 minutes from the village of Lake George, which, by the way is a tourist trap but a nice town to walk around & stretch your legs. The lake is huge, so a chart is in order. I believe the state owns a campground on one of the islands, but you will definetely need a reservation. There is plenty to do in that area besides boating. Great Escape is a great amusement park. Go there. Also check out Prospect Mountain. Get to the summit for a beautiful vista of the lake. Drive to the 1st 2 lookouts & a shuttle will take you to the top. Well worth it. Hey, good luck on your vacation. You will have a great time at either destination, that I can guarantee you.
