Recommended Procedure?

OK, I'm ready to tackle the impeller change on my 1985 90hp Johnson. I bought a service manual, and a water pump kit and the manual explains how to put it together and bolt it in but it is not real specific on how to get to it. It seems to imply that one has to drop the lower unit off of the motor. Is that correct?

That is correct. You must remove the lower unit from the motor and the pump will be sitting right on top inside of the lower unit. Can't miss it once you get the lower unit off. Go to the section in the Manual on removing the lower unit and follow the instructions for getting it off. If you have any trouble getting the lower unit off, just post back. It's pretty straightforward. Remove the lower unit retaining bolts, disconnect the shiftshaft and it should slide off. I would have a friend help out, as the larger lower units are easier to handle with 2 people. Pay particular attention to the bolt under the trim tab. This bolt is often missed when removing the lower unit and it will not drop down until it's out....

Rick speaks with straight tongue. I start with disconnecting the shift linkage. It'll be cleverly disguised up under the lower carb and almost impossible to disconnect without removing the carb but it can be done.

c/6
Hooty
