I thought, in my current situation that if I started a thread asking (because I cannot find one unless it is Op thread specific) all of you marine engine repair guru's about re-powering an engine regardless of year/model Johnson/Evinrude if you guys would be willing to give us the recommendations of shops that do re-manufactured powerheads and or rebuilt powerheads. Could you please way in on the pro's and con's of getting a remmaned as opposed to a rebuilt powerhead and also how far gone an engine needs to be when you know there is no other alternative but to replace the powerhead. Once the point of no return has been reached and a powerhead of some sort is the only option left, who would you guys recommend and who would you stay away from? Thank you guys for everything you do for the boating community..

There can be many various reasons that an existing powerhead cannot be rebuilt. 1. The powerhead blew up and is damaged internally beyond repair. (hole in the block) 2. The powerhead cyl liner bores are worn the the point that it cannot be overbored to a size which can use readily available oversize pistons. 3. The engine/rotating assembly was overheated to the extent that it turned blue. (crank/rods) Replacement parts exceed the purchase of a reman powerhead. In most all cases, the decision to go with a reman powerhead is a financial one, to include the consideration of some type of warranty from the rebuilder. Once that is determined, a reman powerhead can offer a solid, cost effective alternative. This website offers remain OMC powerheads from OBR. A known solid supplier of reman powerheads to the marine industry.

To add to above:
REBUILT

To rebuild is to recondition by cleaning, inspecting and replacing severely worn or broken parts. Serviceable parts are reused within the manufacturer’s acceptable wear limits. The quality of rebuilt components varies widely and many come with only a short term warranty.

REMANUFACTURED

To remanufacture is to make as closely to new as possible. All core material – head and block castings, crankshaft, camshaft and rods - are carefully inspected, checked against original equipment measured specifications for correct dimensional tolerances and precisely machined. Replacement parts are new or requalified to meet exacting standards and tolerances. Testing is performed to manufacturer measured specifications and original production standards.
REFRESH
To retain all original parts only replacing needed gaskets, rings and deglazing of cylinders. Often misquoted as a rebuild...

OBR is a good company and about 85% of remans quoted by other companies on the web are supplied by them. Several questionable that pop up are A1/Blackbird with both good and bad reports posted.
