I've read a few post concerning this and also read the manual I have. Unfortunately, none made it simple to understand. 1968 Merc 6HP: Can someone tell me how to get it back on the right way?!?!
Also, do I have to put a screw in the FLUSH opening; is it necessary?

It would help if you discribe the problem you are having.

Re: reconnecting lower unit

I'm having trouble getting the lower unit past those last couple of inches before it seals. I got it to go in when I had it in neutral, but it was in fwd when I took it out. I don't think the splines are lining up.

Re: reconnecting lower unit

Both the motor and L/U need to be in foward or nuetral as long as both are the same. If in foward then turn the prop to align the spline. If in nuetral turn the flywheel to align spline. Let us know what happens.:)

Re: reconnecting lower unit

how can I tell if the L/U is in neutral or forward? I can use vise grips and spin in both directions. Obviously, it's in neutral, right? So, with a little help from a friend, I should be able to turn the flywheel until it slides in?

Take the spark plugs out. The flywheel will turn much easier.

Re: reconnecting lower unit

When in foward the prop will turn the shaft in one direction and ratchet in the other.

Nuetral free spin both ways.

Reverse will spin the shaft in either direction.

Re: reconnecting lower unit

I still have the lower unit apart from the motor. At this moment, the prop will turn clockwise (forward motion) and clicks while doing so. It will not turn counter-clockwise. Does this give anyone more info as to what should be done?

It's in forward gear. you should be able to turn the prop to lign up the splines.

Re: reconnecting lower unit

With the lower unt off, if you can turn the prop and the drive shaft doesn't turn it's in neutral. If you have the unit on the engine, and you can turn the prop easily, it's still in neutral. If you can't turn it, its in either forward or reverse gear.

Re: reconnecting lower unit

Where you are now the prop will turn counterclockwise. This will cause the shaft to turn and align.

Re: reconnecting lower unit

I've found with my 67 9.8 that it's easiest in forward..turn the motor upside down so the lower unit part would be facing the sky...look in the hole where the shift shaft goes and you will see the shift shaft coupling that is attached to the shift handle..twiddle the shift handle a LITTLE bit till the shift shaft coupling is centered in the hole and slide your lower unit on. Make sure your water tube guide is on and the water tube goes into it..put some oil on the tip of the tube also. Watch as you slide the lower unit on so you can get that front nut on before you go too deep or you will have to drop it a bit to get it on.
