I am recovering my bunks this weekend. Need opinions. 1. cover the entire board, or leave the bottom uncovered. and 2. Stainless steel vs. Monel staples. I am looking at SS staple box and it specifically says, not for marine use, but several on this forum say to use ss staples. They are a lot less expensive and much more available than the monel. thanks for any input. fresh water application only. Never around salt

fold carpet over bunk board top side down both ends and sides dead center bottom is where you want the seams to meet . i used regular longest staples with my hand stapler. used commerical grade carpet been on there now about 4 yrs still like new. but i did put new galvanized bolts in bunk boards to frame and all staples just ends and undersides not any on top.

Different approach. I leave the underside open so it drains and has a better chance of drying out. Also used brass upolstery tacks instead of staples.

I left my under side open to dry-out also, but I did use stainless staples. I also used stainless lag bolts in bunk to trailer brace.

I wrapped mine like a present, and used SS staples 3 years ago and they are holding up great.

I use bunk carpet on 2x6 untreated lumber, it covers about 1" of the bottom so the other 4" can dry out. I use monel staples. I had to use 1" regular steel on the end caps cause they were pretty thick folded over like the end of a present. I dont think you can go too wrong, just remember the carpet retains water, so it needs a chance to dry out.

Stainless staples using an air stapler. I do not cover all of the wood so less moisture is trapped.

Re: recovering bunks

thanks guys for the input. Good ideas here and I think all are great and would work. I bought probably way to much carpeting so I am sure I will go all the way around like they are at present. Only replacing due to a tear in one of them. Thanks again

I'm getting ready to recover my bunks too but was thinking I should use pressure treated wood wrapped in carpet. Are you guys using regular kiln dried lumber for yours? I was afraid water would rot them out too quickly if they weren't pressure treated. Thanks!

I used pressure treated with carpet glue and whatever staples i had..... if the staples rust out the glue will hold forever

The new pressure treated is NOT a good idea if you have an aluminum boat. It leaches through the carpet and eats the metal.
