Rectifer problem?

Whats up guys

Dumb***** me hooked up the battery cables in reverse for a second, I fixed them and started it up, ran perfect, just like normal, tach worked, which I see looking into some threads is one test to see if the rectifer is blown, but im not sure about the charging, the volt meter on the dash stayed right around 12 which it is normally around 13-14, now could this be the tell tale sign of a rectifer problem? I am picking up a multimeter tomorrow to check the battery, with the engine not started and then with it started, not started should be 12 and started should be around 13.4 correct?

By the way I have an 89 Evinrude 88SPL.

Any help would be great!

Is your rectifier the type that has 3 wires, a triangular base and a cylindrical body?

If, so and if the voltage reading at the battery is the same with the engine off and with the engine running, then you probably have some damage to the rectifier and it may need to be replaced.

Um, im not sure if it is the 3 wire, i looked at the parts on iboats and it shows as a 3 wire so it must be. Is this an easy fix with no other problems other then new battery?

When you get a chance, look at what you have, motors were set up either way, regulated and unregulated. If it is the unregulated rectifier and if it needs to be replaced, its $30. + and you just need a screwdriver to change the wires and bolt it down. If you disconnect the rectifier to test it, be sure to draw a color diagram so that you get the wires back correctly.

Nothing you said or did indicates that you need a new battery.

Yeah, I def need a new battery anyway, its 4 years old anyhow. Would an 1989 motor have a regulated rectifer? I hope not cuz that sounds like it would cost more

The regulated rectifiers are more but they give you a little more freedom in terms of the kind of battery you use. The CDI regulated rectifier for your motor would be around 78.00.

The good thing about the unregulated type is that it is easy to do and you don't need a mechanic. You should use a marine deep-cycle dual purpose battery with it though.
