According to my diagram the rectifier charges the batteries via the red wire connected to the top of the starter solenoid. Is that correct? I am sure it it is working as tach works fine but it was hard to start last time out. Good connections and everything only sat for three weeks after last trip. New battery. Should I have to keep a maintenence charge on my starting battery as well as my deep cells?

i wouldnt think so unless your battery is getting weak or you have a draw somewhere.

was all of your switches off when you checked?

Yes all switches were off. I have been using a battery from my ford truck just for starting. It is much larger than I need I am sure. Maybe it is too big? All the rest of the electronics are running off of separate batteries.

Re: rectifier charge wire 115 evin 94'

im an auto mech and i always bought the biggest battery i could find/afford that would fit into the battery tray.

i just asked the "battery too big" question on this site on a different thread so im probably not the best person to give you battery advice for boats........other than telling you to take a multimeter and check your wireing to see if you have a draw somewhere, you may have ign switch probs.... or if you measure your battery with a multimeter and its fully charged you may have a failing starter or solenoid. thats where i would start on a car if i suspected a draw and youre sure your battery is good......it has been load tested?

i was given a site for batterys in boats and there was smoke coming from my ears so i posted "battery" on here...my "battery" thread should still be within the first couple of pages i just asked today. heres the boat battery site

Skeetr, Sometimes one diode of a rectifier will short. This creates a circuit from your battery thru the stator to ground, and will drain your battery. Have you done a voltage test to see if the motor is really charging your battery?

In any case, I recommend you test the rectifier to see if it is good or shorted or open.

The red wire from the rectifier should be connected to the large post on the solenoid to which the positive battery cable is attached.

Put your voltmeter on the battery terminals with the engine off and take a reading. Then check it again with the engine running to see if you are getting a higher charging voltage.

The most frequent battery problem sited on this forum are the battery cables corroding inside the sheathing or at the terminals.

That is a definite possibility. I am going to replace the wiring to the battery for assurance sake. The sheathing is loose on several parts of the wire but if does not feel stiff. Sure would like it to fire up on the first crank. Smokes like a beast after repeated trys. I am also going to remove the battery selector switch. It checked out fine but I just don't use it other than as an off switch. I do alot of night fishing and trolling and am using 2 6v deep cells which I have never hooked to the charging system figuring them just too deep for a rectifier to charge.
