Ok, for starters ive been getting a lot of comments bc i have many threads going for this one problem. Yes i know that so if you dont like it or whatever, simply dont respond or help. I start a new thread for every new thought or idea on what it is after the last one i tried didnt fix it so please understand im just trying to get some help. That being said i have a 1985 Evinrude 150 Hp V-6. It will start of a few seconds then die. Ive had the coils tested, the power packs replaced and i still have bad spark. My buddy who is fresh out of Boat Mechanic school thinks its my Rectifier. I know that its main purpose is to charge the battery and when its bad it stops charging the battery but what else is the purpose and can it do what its doing if its going bad or is bad? The one big clue i looked passed is the fact that it doesnt charge the battery. So i know its bad but the boat ran fine befor when it wasnt charging the battery. So im thinking its the next ond only thing left to fix or replace and that is the stator. Does the rectifier do more than charge that battery? Or is it more likely the Stator?

Do you actually loose spark after start up, have you checked it with an air gap tester?
You might want to go to the CDI website and look up your engine, use their troubleshooting guide to help youi check out your engine.

First, thank you for taking your time to help. And i dont know when i loose it. I use a timing gun and will crank it and it shows i have spark. When i hook up all the plugs it will start and then just die after 2 seconds or so. so its hard to tell if i loose it after it starts since it just dies. But i rechecked it again and then i didnt have spark in all cylinders. so i replaced the power packs. After that it fired up and ran strong but with some back firing so i shut it down. Then started it again and it back fried a lot again. I gave it throttle and it sounded strong untill it went back to idol then kept backfiring again. After i shut it down it went right back to its old problem or startiung but dying after a few seconds or imidiately.

I would still go to the CDI website and completely check your ignition system.

But what does the rectifier do besides charge the batter which it isnt? Does it provide the power to keep it running or is the the stators job? Im just confused on what the difrence is betweet the 2 as in what jobs they do for the motor.

The stator consists of two separate winding arrays which do different jobs. One array (which can have several coils) satisfies the CDI unit, and the other supplies the rectifier/regulator with battery charging current. If the Battery charging coils are connected to a shorted rec/reg unit, it can overheat the complete stator and affect other coils. Thats why you disconnect it when you have ignition problems (to see if it has an affect)
