Rectifier or Stator

I still have that off an on tach issue. It doesn't bounce around it's either working or not. Usualy at idle it's off then when I get up on plain it will pop up and start working. It may or may not stay on. I know my stator has been hot and I will be replacing it next week. My question is would a problem stator cause this or is it the rectifier? The boat charges 12.5v at idle and around 14v going down the lake according to volt gauge on the dash.

What do you mean your stator was hot? What kind of motor do you have? Those stators are expensive to replace. Sounds to me like you may have a loose connection on your tach wires. Check out the ground, hot wire and sending wire on the tach and the sending wire back at the motor. I don't have near the experience of most of these guys in here but before I spent big bucks on a stator thats what I would do.

I've had various erratic tach readings. The latest as on a 92 70 hp Johnson. Read 0-3500, then went to zero as the rpm's went up further-that sort of thing. The rectifier is always a prime suspect. In this case, replacing it resolved the problem. (Depending on model, you may have a combined rectifier/regulator.)

I have a johnson 200gt 1991. The stator had been hot enough to melt some plastic and drop it down on my timing base. The motor runs good a guess lol. But i figure I should replace it before it goes out and takes out all the electronics?

You have a 35 amp charging system, that means you have the combo Reg/Rectifier, neither are cheap (220-270) depending. You have to take off the power pack on the back of the flywheel, its not hard, just rember which wires go where. With the stator, you gotta take everything off.

Yep the 35amp is it. Which is bad or both? Rectifier or Stator?
