rectifier output

I bought the Radio Shack rectifier PMM talks about for my (73) 850 L4 and
installed it yesterday. I was getting some charge
from my old one (13.2v) but the tach would not work. Hooked up the new one, tach started working and
battery charging like a champ. I just have one
question - at idle it charges at almost 15 volts - i dont have a regulator so wanted to know if it could overcharge the battery at higher rpms? Don't know how much voltage it will max out at, haven't tried it at WOT. Any comments?

Re: rectifier output

Ernie, None of these motors have voltage regulators. The max charging amperage is so low (6-12Amps at high RPMs) that the battery acts as a load and a voltage regulator. if you use the motor a lot, check the level of the water in the battery, and top it off every so often, as the constant charging will use some of it up.

Re: rectifier output

Dont let your system charge over 17 volts or you can damage your CDI pack. Turn some stuff on to put a load on the electrical system.

Trent, older motors' CDI switchboxes aren't connected to the 12v charging systems - they're stand-alone magneto systems that just use the key switch to turn then off. I agree, turn on something to load it down or get a regulator.

This is **totally** incorrect. The CDI type switchboxes see the same "12V" B+ as the rest of the whole "12V" system. It's the later ADI systems that have independant circuits.

Turn on lights and turn up the radio and stuff to try to keep it under 14. :)

-W

Re: rectifier output

What year did the 12v systems go to the ADI ignition? That '73 must be the old style, my '86 boxes don't see 12v. Thanks for the knowledge CC.

Re: rectifier output

It was mid-year 1979 for the inline 6.

But keeping the voltage down is still important for the CD player and the fish finder.

-W

That's why I put a CDI/Rapair 194-5279 in to replace the merc stuff and how did you know I had a CD & fishfinder?

Re: rectifier output

Two common reasons....

1. Running with poor connections to battery (dead open)

2. Starting the motor with a nearly dead battery and then taking off at WOT. (the battery looks like almost a dead short to the rectifier and it overheats)

-W (who's done #2 a couple times and added heat sink grease to the whole equation)

Re: rectifier output

Thanks for all the responses, you guys are great! As for why the original bit the dust - who knows? It was only 31 years old - doesn't anything last anymore? :) I had picked up a used one and it worked to charge the battery but the tach would not work on it. Everything works fine now, just disn't want to fry my battery.
