What is the best method for bench testing the rectifier/regulator on this motor? I saw on CDI to attach leads from ohmmeter to the yellow and red leads of the rectifier, then switch the ohmmeter leads and see if you get the same, or different, reading. Should there be continuity one way and a reading the other?
The motor got hot the other day (clogged the thermostat putting out of shallow sandy water) and the tach quit working. I started the engine yesterday and it runs fine, but the tach doesn't work and the battery is getting 16+ volts at idle. Is this too high? I figured the charge would be in the 13 v range, maybe more at higher rpm's.
Thanks in advance.

Not sure you can test the regulator that way. That test is for a bridge rectifier, where you can get to all 4 leads.

Normally the regulators either work or not. So check voltage of battery, engine not running. Start the motor ant test battery voltage again. Rev the motor to 1500PM and see if voltage rises. If so, regulator is good.

OEM Service manual specifies a 35 Amp load test, but it takes a special tool.
