I have an 86 DT140 that I found the rectifier/regulator melted in. Before I replace this, do I need to find an underlying problem or is this how these things crap out. I found a topics on this in the search, but never found an answer or what to look for. Thanks

Re: Rectifier/Regulator

One of the common cause for this is loose/corroded or unhooked battery connections.

Re: Rectifier/Regulator

check the battery! i have a 88 dt115 had the same problem.melted regulator.. i changed it still had high voltage....regulator would get very hot while running higher rpms.... i checked and cleaned all grounds all battery connections and still had voltage issues.....went to advance auto and bought the biggest marine cranking battery they had ( only 440 cca) still had high voltage...started pulling my hair out so i tried an interstate 800 cca marine starting battery from my dads boat and voltage runs around 13.5 volts at higher rpms... problem solved......then first time i ran it hard ran for about 15 mins and engine cut out sounded like i lost a cylinder. i took the cover off and top spark plug was hanging by the wire......tightened it back up and runs like a charm............:)
