Got a new rectifier/regulator today while removeing the old one
i see that it has a red a pair of yellows a gray and a purple

well the new one has a red a pair of yellows and a gray no purple
i see that the engine wire harness has a purple that i traced to the main plug

so i guess the new rectifier/ regulator will not work

also is there a way to bench test the old rectifier/regulator
to see if it is good or bad

Re: Rectifier/Regulator

No way that I know of to bench test a regulator/rectifier. Bound to be a way with special kit I expect though.

I believe new ones do not have the purple wire.

Stick around .. someone will tell you what to do .. I forget.

Re: Rectifier/Regulator

There is a way to test a VR, however, it requires some specialized equipment. Basically you run the motor, and crank up an electrical load, up to the max of the regulator and see if it can put out the 35Ams of power.

We normally put a voltmeter on the battery, and crank up the motor. If you see more voltage with the motor running than with the motor off, the VR is putting out some current, at least.

The purple wire is the ign accessory wire. It was used to give a reference voltage to the VR. I am not sure if/why they D/C it.

Re: Rectifier/Regulator

For the last 9 years or so some of the regulators come without the purple "sense" wire. Just tape off the purple on the engine side and ty-rap it to another wire to protect it.

Install your new regulator per the service manual, check the stator and resistance to make sure there are no other problems.

Remove any wing nuts fastening the engine cables to the batteries and use stainless steel nuts and lockwashers. Loose or corroded connections are the biggest cause of regulator failures, unless someone is hooking up a battery backwards.
