I have a 1989 80hp Merc that has a bad rectifier. the rectifier currently on my motor has the 3 terminals orientated in a vertical line. the replacement rectifiers i have found on-line have the 3 posts in a triangle pattern. is this anything I should be concerned about? thanks.

Re: rectifier replacement

No, the shape of the rectiifer doesn't matter. Make sure you positively identify your rectiifer. A Merc rectifier has two yellow and one red wire on it. You also may have a brown or grey wire connected to one of the yellow wires as well.

Are you sure that motor is not an early 70's model with the large rectiifer mounted in the front lower cowl?

Re: rectifier replacement

Hi, I have yellow wires connected to two of the posts, and a grey wire connected to the post marked tach. I am sure of the model year as I had merc confirm the serial number when I bought the boat/motor.
Thanks for the help.

Re: rectifier replacement

The 2 yellow wire are AC source from your stator, they go on the A and C terminals of the rectifier. Then the red wire for your 12volts goes on the + terminal of your rectifier. Thats the way mine is connected.
