If you have a rectifier and a tach hooked up(1970 115 evinrude) and the rectifier blows, will the tach still work?

I know my 1974 50HP Evinrude tach will not work with a bad rectifier so maybe yours will not either...Someone should know for sure I would think...

Re: Rectifier/tach.

it depends on how the rectifier blows and where the tach is connected. It may or may not work....

Re: Rectifier/tach.

There are posts on here on how to test rectifiers. One is in the FAQ section in the "Repair and Maintenance" section. Search.......Joe Reeves rectifier test......in that section. You test for resistance with a ohm meter. Easy tests if you have a ohm meter. My 1974 115HP Johnson tach wasn't working and my rectifier tested bad on all tests so I replaced it and tach worked. I got a CDI rectifier from iBoats. Very happy with iBoats and the rectifier. Ordered it on a Friday and got it on Monday using the cheapest U.S. Mail option.

Re: Rectifier/tach.

go here and download the install sheet for your part number....it has troubleshooting and testing methods..you will need a DVA adapter and a multi meter..it will not be the last time you use these tools if you continue to own an outboard motor. I bought a spark gap tester, a dva adapter and a cresent wrench...now I am the neighborhood boat mechanic...lol
