The tachometer on my 1987 90 HP Merc wasn't working, so I moved the tach wire over to the other terminal on the rectifier and now the tach works.

Does this mean I need to replace the rectifier?

Re: Rectifier

No, it probably means that there was some corrosion at the connection and by disconnecting and connecting the spade connector, you burnished it and got a better connection.

The two wires from the stator that go to the rectifier are AC power so it doesn't matter which one you connect the tach pulse wire to.

If you have a cigarette lighter socket, go and buy a plug in voltmeter from Walmart. This will always tell you what your voltage is so you won't have to worry about a low battery or bad rectifier.
