I've got a 1984 200 Black Max on my fishing boat. I am running a fish finder, GPS and VHF on the boat and my voltage gauge doesn't get above 11.5 volts while I'm running. I am also going through rectifiers every season. A friend of mine told me that if I put a a larger rectifier on to handle the load from all the accessories it would solve the problem. Is this true? If so what rectifier should I buy, I have part number 816770 on tthe motor right now. Thanks

Another fit is to retrofit a mercury or CDI 20 amp voltage regulator.

CDI example.

Re: Rectifiers and Accessories

Thanks very much for the reply. Should I do both or will one or the other do the job?

Re: Rectifiers and Accessories

I got the 35 amp rectifier and installed it. It seems to be charging better, its just above the 12 volt mark on the gauge now. The only problem is that my tach isn't working. The rectifier has 4 posts. I put the red charge wire to the positive, one yellow stator wire to the AC post, the second yellow stator wire to the post below the AC post and the tach wire paired with the second stator wire. Should the tach wire go to the positive post? Thanks for your help

You wired it wrong.
The yellow wires go to the two AC terminals.
Positive goes to red
Negative goes to ground. (it's internal on the stock one) Make sure it's a stout connection.
Tach goes to either yellow. Makes no difference. Should work.

hope it helps

Can you post the source, part number and contact info for the rectifier you used? I'm sure others, myself included, could use this. Thanks.

These are also available at a local Radio Shack if you prefer not to wait on shipping. They're around $5-6 if I remember correctly.

Mine is still working great on my boat a year later.
