can anyon tell me the purpose of the red plastic arm that is located next to the starter pulley and below the flywheel? Also, It has a spring clip on it and on mine it is hanging free. WHere does this hook too. More info: there is a linkage next to this red arm that moves when turning the power handle. Please help.

It is a starter lock-out. It will lock out the rewind starter if the engine is in gear at full throttle. It is a safety feature. The spring clip goes around the upright projection on the rewind housing.

Thanks, this helps. although i have one other question. Is it supposed to be under tension all the time? As to me, it looks like it should be!

Do you mean the red lever? When you turn the throttle control back, and shift to neutral, you will see the lever lift up, and out of engagement with the starter pulley.

yes, i see that now. Ok thanks . but still the spring is not correct maybe i am missing something, i know its a little problem but i would like to make sure its working correctly. Which brings me again to upright projection on the starter/rewind housing. Does the spring go around the tang attached to the starter pulley. because i dont see anyother upright projection. Hmmm.

That is not the assembly I was thinking of, but I see no problem there. Is the rewind working properly when the engine is in neatral, and the throttle advaced to the start position?

Use the instant ubb code for "image" on the "full repy form" page.<br /><br />For a bit more info go to "faq" then "How do I use HTML and UBB code" then follow the link to "Complete details of UBB code are listed here"<br /><br />The picture must be on a server somewhere that these forums can link to and must be a suitable image file eg jpg.<br /><br />Although written for users of the YBW.com forums in the UK you will find an excellent guide to preparing and posting pics on similar forums here:- Shipswoofy's guide

Re: red plastic arm, johnson 15hp

From the looks of your starter lockout spring, the RED arm should be on the other side of the upright vertical silver bar. That's why there's no tension on the spring. Perhaps you can loosen (NOT TO MUCH) the large bolt holding the starter assembly, rotate the starter assembly clockwise to allow you to position the RED arm as in my pic. Rotate the starter assembly back to it's original position, and tighten the bolt.<br /><br />Another option is to rotate the flywheel until the bolt that holds the RED lockout arm is fully exposed. There's a cut-out in the edge of the flywheel for this reason. Loosen or remove this bolt, position the RED arm as in my pic and replace the bolt.<br /><br />When properly positioned, the starter rope will be disabled when the motor is in gear. The motor does not have to be running to put it in gear. If you find it hard to get into forward or reverse gear, manually rotate the flywheel clockwise while putting gentle pressure on the gear shift lever, it should go into gear easily. By all means, don't try to force the lower unit into gear if it binds, just apply pressure on the gear lever and rotate the flywheel, it should slide into gear.<br />When in gear, you should see the RED arm engage the starter assembly, preventing the rope from being pulled. When in Neutral gear, the RED arm retracts and allows the rope to be pulled.
