Red sky at night. . .

A few folk have asked me what this means. I guess that a few more would like to know but haven't asked.<br /><br />An old mariners' weather forecasting aid was the couplet:<br /><br />Red sky at night, Sailor's delight.<br />Red sky at morning, Sailor, take warning!<br /><br />A red sky at sunset reveals that there is clear sky far to the west, which will arrive tomorrow.<br /><br />A red sky at dawn shows a clear sky far to the east, which may have been replaced by severe weather where you are.<br /><br />My tag line is an old mariner's way of wishing you clear skies tomorrow.<br /><br />Red sky at night. . .<br />JB

A lot of farmers used that quote as well. Don't know how long it has been around, but I can remember my grandmother telling me that when I was about 5.<br /><br />Odd thing is that it is usually true most of the time.

I sure wish that "Red sky at night, Sailor's delight," applied here. I'm landlocked up here and any color of sky (besides blue) is usually an impending sign of disaster.

I have always believed this saying was based on the principal most prevailing weather comes from the west carrying lots of dust thus creating red in the opposing horizon. Red sky at night means the dust has blown past (east horizon) signaling the bad weather is past. And conversly red in the morning (west horizon)where the weather comes from means the weather is kicking up dust.<br /><br />Does anybody know if this is the true oragins of this saying?

I thought you would rather not discussed this, and it's okay of course. <br />So, It's interesting to me when I saw you started this tread few moments ago, and here you are, explaining what's your tag lines is all about! <br /><br />Thanks for your explanation; which scientifically I am not in the know. And you're right- it originally came from the ancient Mariners, even before Jesus Christ's time some 2000 years ago, since he quoted this old saying to those Pharisees and Sadducees (very religous Jews of the time), as recorded in Matthews 16: 2-3. <br /><br />I actually wanted to use your tag line also (even though that was already paraphrased in English to produce the resulting rhyme), but since it's already taken, so I picked what's left of it... <br />Hope that's okay with you?
