The Red Tailed Hawk is another success story of the DDT ban.

As a kid, never saw one until I was 20 in the late 70's.

Now I probably see 25 a day, driving truck (me, not them).

They never fail to impress. :)

I love all birds of prey. I have a Cooper's Hawk that hangs near my house. We also have Kites which are amazing to watch. Redtail's IMHO are one of the most beautiful. Very common, but gorgeous.

Please leave DDT out of this discussion. It will tailspin and get locked . . . ;)

Re: Red Tail Hawk

Since the re-introduction a few years back, they're getting to be more common around here. The sad thing is, they can become roadkill too. Like most animals they prefer an easy meal instead of having to hunt for one. They go to pick up roadkills and get hit. I saw one perched on a speed limit sign and two dead on the road. I watched a bald eagle taking a bath on the bank and later on swooped down to get fish while a I was fishing a few weeks ago. Coolest thing I've ever witnessed while on a boat.

Great pix. Reddy is one of my favorite year-round residents of The Hideout.

Shucks, after seeing the colorblind poll, 18% of y'all can't see that it is a red tail anyway!:p:D:D

Great pictures jcsercsa! That seagull probably never saw it coming!

A couple of weeks ago I saw a hawk being chased around by a Bluejay down here in VA. It was funny 'cause the hawk was about twice the size of the Bluejay pursuing it.

We have Peregrines living within the high rises in Downtown LA. I read an article about it a few years ago. Apparently, those in the office buildings get to witness mid air take downs of Pigeons quite regularly. I'd love to see that

We have a few that hang around our farm and they are pretty cool to watch till they dive bomb one of the chickens or cats.

We have had a red tail (or two) nesting around here for the last several years. My wife has several bird feeders out back... and it does exactly that - feeds the hawks. Every once in a while I get to observe a swoop and a scatter.

Don't tell my wife.

There's been a redtail hangin' around this area for a couple weeks. We usually only get Cooper's and the occasional Merlin.

Red Tails are about the only thing you see around Washington, Ga. and a great bird to watch. They leave my wife's feeder birds alone which is a surprise after reading post from gstanton.

I mean birds of prey. An occasional owl with insomnia and I swear I saw one eagle at the pond a year ago but no binoc's and couldn't confirm it.

I love watching all birds of prey. The only problem is, when I was a child and we owned small dogs (chihuahuas and a weenie dog puppy), the birds would be stalking them. One day I was mowing the yard (two acres in the country) and my dog came flying up and into the bar. Right above him in the air was a vulture swooping down. Quite a sight. I see little sparrows and stuff tag-teaming the hawks pretty frequently down here, well, at least until the boom when all the "northerners" moved down here.

25yrs ago I remember in chicago growing up that they bought falcons for the bad pigeon problem downtown. I don't know if they're still there or not??

They are awesome.

If you get the chance, you should check out Clarksville, MO or Alton, Ill. sometime in winter. A few hundred bald eagles have their winter nests in those areas.

Supposedly we have bald eagles down here too, but I've never seen one. I do see a lot of osprey when I'm out on the river here and in MA. They build their nests on top of the channel markers and on platforms in the marsh and raise hell if you get too close to them. Sometimes you see them flying by with a big fish in their talons, usually on the same days that I'm not catching anything.
