I'm rebuilding my 140 hp evinrude powerhead. stopped by the repair shop to pick up my new pistons and gaskets, so I asked the guy who does rebuilds a few questions. he said to use red Loctite on the rod cap bolts and the flywheel. I am using the old cap bolts. the manual doesn't say to, but it says to replace the bolts. also , he uses Loctite on the flywheel, he just tightens it with a impacter, but doesn't torque it. what do you guys do?

?????--------You use oil on the rod bolts to get an accurate torque reading / value to tighten these !!!---------------------You torque the flywheel nut to 100 FT-LBS

Please do NOT put red loc tite on the flywheel nut, lol! There is no need for that. Ensure tapers are CLEAN and dry, then torque to spec as mentioned.

Also, only use OEM flywheel key.

Some rod caps have locks of sorts, the ones without, use appropriate torque to keep from pulling out.

If it was my motor I'd replace the rod cap bolts. Think what's going on when that motor is running 5000-6000 rpm ??

Anybody that puts locktite on a flywheel should be shot at sunrise. If it gets on the taper, you will never get it off again.

EDIT: You'll probably never get the rod bolts out again either, without heating them to 300 F.

My manual says to coat the threads of the flywheel nut with OMC gasket sealing compound.
Note the subtle differences, not on the crankshaft threads & not on the flywheel taper.

I think I'm going to go get new rod cap bolts and forego the threadlock, thanks

Bet that is not the OEM manual.

Back when I was hanging motors, the mechanics had a big problem on the 3-cyl models. Many times when they pulled the flywheel, the crank threads came off with the nut. They had to pull the crank and get a machine shop to weld material on, then cut threads. Not fun. Haven't seen that problem noted on this forum though - wonder if it still happens?

I have a factory manual for newer V-4 / V-6 / V8 motors and it states to use gasket sealing compound on the nut.

Gasket sealer such as permatex #3 makes a good corrosion inhibitor and never sets. VP uses it on machined mating surfaces

Then I'd have lost the bet. :)
But would that not make torquing to correct value a bit of a crap shoot?
