In the middle of tearing down my '76 evinrude 9.9hp I must have bent the reed plate slightly because the one leaf is slightly gapped from the plate. Was going to straighten it and lap it flat again, but there is a small copper/brass insert in the plate that needs taken out. Anybody tell me what this insert is and how to get it out of the plate?? Sorry no pics, left them at home.

I have a good plate you could put your reeds in, just needs to be cleaned up.

That would be AWSOME! If not, is there a way to get this insert out? Looks to me like it is swedged into the plate. Think that the plate would be easy enough to straighten.

Yeah. There was a screen in the hole on the opposite side of the plate from the reeds. On the same side as the reeds there is a round copper insert that has 4 slots thru the top. Will post a picture this afternoon when I get home to make it a little clearer.

Here's the pics. Sorry but they're a little blurry.

This is the side opposite the reed valves. The hole in the top left corner is where the screen is. When I dismantled it, the screen was plugged full of plastic.

This is the pic of the other side. The reeds are located on this side. The copper insert is in the top right corner of the pic. Again, sorry its so blurry. Don't have the steadiest hands.

Looks like it pops out but it's part of the plate so who knows. I have the one I told you about, cleaned it up, straight as an arrow. Totally up to you, out of curiousity I looked up the price on Shop2.evinrude.com, $100+ dollars, yikes. Try popping it out and straightening the plate, if you F it up l have one for you.

Re: reed plate help!

Thanks. Just found another thread that says its a check valve that just pops out. Gonna try to take it to work again tomorrow and see if i can get it out and get the plate flattened. Might still take you up on your offer if it doesn't work out though. I did look at what it would be to get a new one and I have to agree with you. $108.00! You had it right, YIKES!

bktheking: Your a generous man. That is a good camera you use.

I remember reading somewhere that was a check valve and if it was packed with plastic it wasn't doing the job. I'm just not sure what it's job is exactly. Rick.

Re: reed plate help!

Careful does it. Our friends to the south are used to buying 12 packs for a few dollars. They might be alarmed at what we northerners pay for it. Rick.

Re: reed plate help!

bktheking you have been extremly helpful to my rebuild so far. Thanks for all of the tips and info. Brought the plate to work this morning and got it flattend back out (I think). True test will be when I go home and put the reeds back on it. Thanks again for the offer, but I'm still hoping that this one works out. Did have 1 mishap with the check valve though. Was tapping it back in and bent one of the tangs over, then when I went to bend it back out it snapped off. Will this affect the performance?? Blew air through it and it still seems to work.

Re: reed plate help!

As long is it holds in place I don't see an issue, if it doesn't it will get sucked into the motor :D Thanks for the recognition, I too have had help from this site, just trying to give back.
