I have a 84 60 hp merc. How much of a job is it to replace the reed valves.Does the power head have to be seperated? Motor has a power. Idles and starts fine When I give it fuel it just bogs down. Comp 150 lbs Rebuilt both carbs and fuel punp.My mechanic thinks its the reeds?
Thanks,Tom

Don't think it is reeds, Tom.

Those engines can start, idle and sound fine with no load while running on one cylinder.

What happens if you pump the primer bulb while you "give it fuel"?

At idle, what does it do if you pull each spark plug wire (one at a time)?

Let us know.

Re: Reed valve help

You really don't want to change the reeds on that engine. It requires a complete teardown of the powerhead.

perhaps thats why his mechanic "suggested" it....

as jb said, that isnt a reed issue..

if your reeds were worn, it wouldnt idle good at all and it would be hard to start since it wouldnt be able to build adequate crankcase pressure.... if it idles fine and starts fine, it aint reeds....

try this...before starting motor, remove one of the spark plug leads and then try to start it, if it sounds normal, you found the bad cylinder... if not try the same thing on the other(s) cylinder(s) till you find the cylinder that isnt pulling its weight

i had a 50hp evinrude that did SAME thing as yours, untill it puked the #1 cylinder all over my boat....get it fixed before you blow it up
