I need to replace the reed valves in a 1996 Force 75hp. What are some options as far as replacement reeds. I want to stay with steel reeds, and I was wondering if the stock replacements are all that are available if I want to use steel.
Also, how are they sold? reeds only, or the entire reed blocks. I have looked around on the internet for reeds, but it looks like Im going to have to order straight from a merc dealer.
Thanks for any info

Re: reed valve options

i think that you will find the reeds from any old chrysler or USmarine engine of 70hp or greater will fit your engine. i've seen 70hp chrysler intake manifolds with three reeds for under $20. with the old chrysler design the leafs are replaceable and the reed body is permanent. mercury never changed the intak manifold from chrylser, they just replaced the reeds with $10 leaf with their own $100 per port reeds. You gotta admit, when it comes to the agressive pursuit of profit with complete disregard for the customer nobody builds as good a motor as mercury.

I will definitely look into that. There are only two busted leafs, and the rest look fine. thanks

there were some big changes, but last set I replaced I bought the boxes, but the reeds were avalible seperatly.
is it so hard just to call the dealer? aftermarket ones are usually priced about the same for retail sales.

rodbolt .... hmm ... i dunno.

I don't think you can get post '91 reeds in component form. That was the whole point of changing them. To guarantee $300 of parts revenue every few years for every engine sold.

I personally haven't tried them, have read post from others who claim they have seen an increase in perfomance and fuel consumption. I am still working on getting new pistons and crankshaft before I can even look at replacing the reeds.

Had to throw the iBoats in there, not good "karma" to advertise a parts website outside of the iBoats arena.
