Reed Valve Question for Fuel Pump Force 15HP

I was inspired by my long distance mechanic, my dad, to check the fuel filter on the fuel pump of my 15HP Force. The motor bogs down at high speed. I took off the pump and found some stuff in the filter but not a lot but it may be contributing to the problem.

What I did find is that the reed valve on the fuel pump to carburator side was not resting lightly on the metal plate of the fuel pump as there was a slight gap. On the opposite side the other reed valve was resting very slightly on the plate as I believe it should.

The Seloc manual has no diagnostic information on the reeds. The reed is metal and held by a screw so I should be able to reset it.

My question is I believe there should not be a gap in that reed valve at all against the plate right? Seems pretty obvious but I have to ask.

Hi, Karvin.

I think you have figured it out.

I am not familiar with your fuel pump, but is it possible to remove, turn over, and reinstall the reed?

If not, you need an overhaul kit which should include new reeds.

Good luck. :)

Thanks, That's what I did and it seems to sit on there ok now. What I need to know now is how do I tell if the diaphram should be replaced. It has no holes but seems a little stretched but with no new one to compare how do I know what is normal. I'll post another on that topic.

Be sure to check the pulse port for good pulse
Ive heard they can get plugged.
You may want to consider a carb rebuild with
special attention to cleaning.

Hi, Karvin.

Change the diaphram. That is an automatic when you tear down a fuel pump.

Steelspike gives good advice, too. Your carb could have been part of your problem.

Good luck. :)

Steelspike - where would I check the pulse port? And can I do it without tearing down the carb? THe carb was torn down and cleaned...supposedly... but I'm not sure how well it was done as I am losing faith in my local mechanic to figure things out.

I'll be getting a rebuilt kit for the fuel pump just for good measure as their is nothing worse than half-*** maintenance.

The jets and fuel siphon/atomizer tubes in the carb on this engine MUST BE VERY CLEAN....very criticle to this engine. Make sure your fuel supply line from the tank is not leaking air either.(sucking air?) The ever so slightly bent reed @ wot would have little effect and would only be criticle at idle only....your high speed problem has to do with fuel supply or air/fuel mixture ratio.
