When did you have the carbs rebuilt??? If it wasnt recent I would start there... Its extremely easy to do and you can eliminate them from the equation.....

Reeds can cause the engine to back fire through the carbs. The best way to check the reeds is to pull them out and use a flashlight. If you see any light around the edges, the reeds need to be replace. Check out this web site for replacement reeds. web page

Testing reed flatness with a flash light to check leakage would be an over-kill. My granite surface plate, with a precision parallel sitting on it, won't pass that test. Two surface's that won't leak light are flat indeed. That engine has a positive pulse that will snap the reed closed, plus they are wet with fuel, and oil to effect a seal.

There was not light around the edges of my Boyesen Reeds when I re-assembled them, but I also hand sanded my reed blocks with a flat piece of glass, (6 inches thick) and some fine sand paper. But, then again I am a perfectionist. I figure if something is worth doing, its worth doing right.

The boyesen reeds will come with instuctions that tell you to sand the reed blocks. Yes it makes a difference.<br />It seems like I used 420 grit. You want it to be as flat and smooth as possible. It took about 2 hours work, and a six pack. :)
