I've got twin 1995 Johnson 130HP engines. Yesterday, I got them both running for the first time after sitting for about a year.

After running the portside motor on muffs for about 5 minutes, once I shut it off, I saw oil coming from the exhaust port (the prop is off right now). Never put it in gear while on muffs, stayed in neutral the whole time and never "gunned" it. Got her to idle down from 2200 to 7 or 800.

Okay, since I'm new to outboards and while I wait on my manual to come, here's my question...

Can I safely assume that the oil/lube I saw coming out of the exhaust was from the lower unit? I've re-sealed an OMC Stringer Electric Shift outdrive (lower and upper units)... Is re-sealing an outboard's lower unit much more complicated?

I'm guessing it will be more involved than just a re-sealing due to my next question...

I'm assuming it is not normal for the prop shaft to move forward and back about or just under 1/4" when sitting, turned off, in neutral... I'm thinking bearings/bearing races, but not sure yet until I get the "book" and possibly tear it down...

Thanks for dealing with a newbie to the outboard world!

the oil goo is normal and decarb will clean the motor out. there is a little play. what did the lower unit grease look like, if no water, i would try it before teardown. basically the same procedure. i think i would drop both lowers and replace impellers, if it has sat for a year.

Was the oil clear and thick like gear lube, or was it extremely black and thin? It may be unburned 2 cycle oil coming out the exhaust. If it is gear lube and you have that much free play, it's possible the bearing carrier is not in all the way, causing both problems.

You know what kids? I didn't even think of residual oil... It was BLACK and oily... Not watery, but definitely oily. I'm hoping that is all there is!

I will put new impellers in both drives. One was not "peeing" as well as the other and I treat impellers like car tires... I can't stand just one new one. I'll have to do both at the same time....

It will be pretty stinky stuff too.

Good Luck
