Last summer I purchased a 1987 Forester 190 Escape. It runs very well and the engine is solid. Structurally everything appears very solid, but since the boat is 20 years old, it needs some aestetic work on the hull. Here are my questions:

1) There is a local fiberglass boat repair shop, is that a place that I should consider taking the boat to have some of the gouges on the boat taken out and repainted?

2) The wiring seems to be getting bad and I would like to redo it...does anyone know where I could find a wiring diagram(s)?

Thanks, I look forward to all the help.

Welcome mgaarder

You could take it to F/G repair shop, but on a 20 year old boat the cost might be more than what you want to pay. For very little money you can try it yourself, many places sell gel coat repair kits with instructions. After you fix the gouges you can buff the whole boat and get it looking much better. The cost for you to do the whole boat is low compared to what a shop will charge to fix just the gouges.

You won't find a wiring diagram for that boat, but people here can help you do a very good job.

You will have many questions as you start this project, so don't be afraid to ask them.

Re: Refurb Advice

my advice is to outline what you want to do, keep the projects small enough, you can see the progress, without getting discouraged. mfgr's, don't put out wiring diagrams. the basics are simple. power from battery, thru a fuse link, to switches, feed to accessories/lights, ground back to battery thru a commond ground. here's a thread with a great diagram. thanks to Silvertip.

To get an idea of what you could say by doing it yourself take it to the shop and have them give you an estimate. Be there when they do the estimate and ask a ton of questions. Then decide.
