Hi guys,

I'm looking at buying a 1999 Regal 2150 LSC cuddy, with a 4.3 Mercruiser. Anyone had this boat? If so I'd be interested in any feedback.

Even if you haven't been on this boat, I'm looking for feedback on stepped hulls, particularly how their stability is at rest-are stepped hulls rockier at rest because of less hull surface contacting the water, or does it not really make a difference?

Thanks!

A stepped hull in something like a Regal won't be any less stable while floating. The difference in hull volume on the side is small.
Regal has a nice stepped hull. When you come up on plane and get it trimmed right you can hear the difference and the ride is smoother. Later models should have a more efficient design than the early models, like a '99 but that is still a good hull.

I have never owned a Regal but love the fit and finish of the boat. I do have a 20ft Stingray with a Z plane hull (similar to a stepped hull) and the 4.3 Merc and can say the boat loves to run. I can take it up to about 45 mph then trim the motor up and the RPM goes up as does the speed. I would suspect the Regal would be comparable if not superior.

The windshield side frames and side view mirrors are made of plastic that does not fare well in the sun and is likely to crack. Replacements are no longer made. Same with the wood grain helm and trim. The top speed will be adequate with the 4.3, but the holeshot will be uninspiring. A V8 would be better. The cockpit sole is likely carpet over plywood and on a boat that old, it will likely have some rot issues. The ski locker floor gelcoat is a known weak area. IT's likel;y all cracked and nasty and that will let water into the foam and plywood under the gelcoat. I like Regals (I currently own a 2000 2550 LSC) but in that vintage and size, I think the Sea Ray 215 is a better boat.
