Anyone replaced the stringers and/or sole on a Regal? I have an 84 195 with, well it's in my sig line. The dreaded OMC Stringer Drive. 2 years ago I cut the rear 10 in. of the stringers, made ply blocks and glassed in because they were rotted and the rear of the engine was crushing them and tearing the boot.

Last run of last summer the the front mount lags pulled out. I parked it and it finally quit raining here so I pulled it out and the stringers seem to be rotted the rest of the way up past the front mounts. I was hoping against odds that is was just the top mount boards.

My question; is there a way to bridge them with some material aluminum angle or other material to get one last summer out of the boat before I make the decision to to/not to pull the sole and rebuild. Please don't let the fact that it's a stringer influence you, I am a marine mechanic and have means/knowledge to keep the drive up and running, the drive is in very good shape.

Never done a deck repair or replace, but not afraid of it. Just wondering how to start.

Not the transom...
If they're ROTTEN, it Can't Push the boat...

Yeah someone needs to lighten up, his response is 100% correct. The motor mounts not only hold the engine but carry all the thrust load, the mount on the transom is not structural.

The OMC Stringer puts all the stress on the stringers so they need to be very strong. I would already be leary of scabbing stringers that are holding my engine up. By the time you put in the work and reinforcement necessary to really carry the load you would have been better off just doing it correctly.

So no one is going to recommend a piecemeal job with the drive you have. I'm all for patch jobs if it makes sense, but in this case it' a bad idea. I'd recommend just pulling the engine/drive and doing it the right way. Depending on how much time you have to work on it, you can get it back in the water in a few weeks and you won't lose the whole season.

OK ok I am aware of the drive situation. Basically my question was about how to start this type of repair and if anyone has any knowledge of how the deck is assembled on a Regal of this vintage.

I guess I will just try to cut atop the stringers up to the ski locker and see how far the rot goes.

But in all fairness that answer was kinda incomplete and even ended with question marks.

typical bond-o post, sarcastic garbage. He forgets not everyone is a genius like him

get use to seeing it from him, as half his posts appear to be full of it and the other half sometimes have merit when he gets "over" himself.

Pardon me for bringing up the obvious, but i had read one to many posts from this guy with nothing other than rude sarcastic garbage and cut downs. For all his helpfull posts, the negative sarcastic ones tend to out shine the others.
Good luck!

Thanks RC. I respond in a few other forums where he is prevalent, and while I have noticed this also, I don't want to step on any toes or start any turf wars here. He does have knowledge and lots of his post do have good information, but sometimes you have to weed it out. I did get a little short there, because his answer was more like a sarcastic comment with no real answer.

I enjoy iBoats and while I been a marine mechanic for over 16 years, I have not done much with the structural aspect of boats.

I really enjoy answering and helping and it helps keep my head in the game over the winter.

See ya at the field

Ignoring the fact that it's a Stringer,..?? That Issue #1...
The drive pushes against the STRINGERS, Not the Transom....
You state above the stringers are GONE from the transom forward, but not to Where...
What are you going to Bridge,..?? From What, to Where,..??
The stern to the bow,..?? That what Stringers do, but your's are Rotten...
Hence, My question,..."If there's No stringers in the hull to Push on,..??..??..??"
",..??..??..??" translates into "What are ya gonna Do?"

I'm Sorry, but next year might be Now.....
