Regarding new line and tangles.

Every year I put a fresh spool of power pro on my main spinning reel. And every year I have issues initially with the line not returning to the spool correctly when finesse fishing (Really slow/slack retrieve). Usually there will be a loop I miss that lands slightly off of the spool and the rest of the retrieve goes over the top. Next cast..... boom a big mess. After the line gets broken in the problem goes away.

I think the problem is either that the coating on the line makes it too stiff to return to the spool properly when slack, or the line is trained to be the same diameter as the spool it is sold on, not my reel.

My question is this...
If I respool Now and the spool sits in my garage for the next three months will it make a difference??

Re: Regarding new line and tangles.

Braid does not take a set. It could sit in your garage for 10 years and perform no differently.

Not a fan of power pro in the lighter weights. Far too stiff for my liking.

Braids in general do not tolerate being spoiled loose. To minimize the problem, spool the line coming off the reel in the correct orientation. Neglect the urge to load too heavy of line. Spool the line wet. Make sure it installed tight. I use a glove when spooling braid. The best thing you can do to minimize the problem is dump the power pro for a better handling product. Sufix performance braid is my favorite #20 and under braid.

Re: Regarding new line and tangles.

I tried suffix this year and had the same problem, maybe even worse. The first time I used Fireline it was the best synthetic I ever used by a mile. Every spool I have ever bought after that first one was plagued by line snaps on the hookset.

If I pay attention I never have an issue with a loose loop on the spool but inevitably I get so zeroed in on my technique that I mess up and loose a bunch of my new line in the snarl. I need to come up with a device to hold a little tension on the line when I retrieve with a slack line. If I could tie said device in with the operation of my bail I wouldn't even have to think about it.

Of course after a month or so of use the line is supple and this is a non issue.

Re: Regarding new line and tangles.

I made up a rig. A piece of 3\8" all thread, two nylon shoulder bushings (3\8" x 5\8") a spring and a wing nut mounted on the wall in the garage.

What type of a reel are you using? Different methods for different reels

Re: Regarding new line and tangles.

I use Power pro and Suffix 832 on my baitcasters and spinning reels. They are about the same as far as performance and break in go IMO. Never been a fan of Fireline.

I use 30lb on my spinning reels and dont have any real issues. Spooling it tight in the correct orientation is the key and also using some mono on the spool first and tying it to the braid helps a ton. If you dont do both the braid will spin on the spool or dig and cause issues. Another helpful thing is to make some really long casts or troll some deep water with most the line out to get the line wet when its new. When you reel it back in it will be much tighter on the spool.
