Regestering boat in other state, not your state

I never transferred ownership of my Starcraft to my name since it was out of season. Now it's boating weather and my boat is not in my name and has an expired registration along with the DMV closed. Vermont is still accepting mail in's and I know some use the Vermont loophole for lost car titles since they have some easy services for that and allow non residents to use their services... Is it going to be a big deal if I sticker the boat for Vermont and operate it on NY waterways? I just want to dunk it this year, and what perfect time to 'distance' myself 1/2 mile from shore

Why don't you just title and reg it in NY. Have you tried doing it online?

In person only in NY for title/ registration transfers. NY allows renewals online, but since this isn't in my name, it's a no go. I called and they said I'm SOL.. I just bought a 1985 Corvette as well the Friday before the governor ordered the DMV's fully closed. I trailered it home as I couldn't get an appointment the day the last day the DMV was open

You missed your chance on the boat for not doing the title/reg when you got it and just bad timing that's not your fault on the Vette.

Better check with VT, many state offices are closed and even online needs people.

Here's a website for the 50.

https://www.signs.com/blog/state-gui...-requirements/

And this is the line you need to read...

Boats can only be registered in one state at a time. Most states allow vessels registered in another state to operate for a period of 60 consecutive days before having to register with that state.

Do you have proof of ownership? Like a receipt when you purchased it from the previously registered owner, also showing the vessel description and registration numbers... You may also need a filled out a transfer form. Again, that should be online.

When we sold my wife's car, the transfer of ownership was all done online. We, as the seller, logged into the system, and gave the purchaser's details. It's all done on secure sites, so unless you give your logon details to someone else, it's safe (as safe as computers can be  but that is the system now)....

I held off because I would have been paying for an expired boat registration, basically. I was thinking of doing it in January but didn't get to the DMV

I looked into this, and it is confusing.. They allow 90 days which hopefully is what this Pandemic will last at most.. BUT, then they say you need boater safety course for all born after '74 to operate in VT waterways, which I am born after. But, NYS does not require it yet.. And then they put " State Of Principal Operation" on the application.. Do they WANT me to register my boat in VT? All in all I have to pay 6% sales tax on $1k + the registration fee but this could get me on the water

I'm going to send in paperwork for my boat, trailer and my Corvette. I was waiting to see if my state might open some things sooner but it doesn't open for a month.... I'm not worried though, I wasn't expecting to launch the boat until the summer anyway
