I was given a boat by a guy i work with, he lost the registration and i need to get one from the DMV. He said that the number on the boat right now should trace back to him, but before i go waste a ton of time waiting in the DMV does anyone know if there is a website i can look this info up on?

Re: registration numbers...

It's my understanding that the registration numbers are with the boat for the life of the hull within the state. Meaning if the boat was registered in the state those numbers belong to that boat in that state until such a time as the governing body is informed the boat has been destroyed or dismantled.

Ask me how I know.

Nope, that would be a violation of privacy.

One Title beats 3 registrations any day.
The Title and/or the Hull number will cross reference to the registration.
Registrations are easy once you get a clean title.

In most states the Registration has to kept ON THE BOAT AT ALL TIMES.
The registration is the piece of paper, not the the numbers and/or the sticker on the hull.
Did the guy who gave you the boat even own it, or did he just give it to you?
If it's too good to be true ..........

"Wasting a ton of time waiting in the DMV" will be the cheapest thing you do in boating!

nope, vehicle and boat registration records aren't private. The DMV or whatever licensing agency will happily give you the info of the previous owner for a fee. Done it many times myself. Last time was a couple months ago, had to track the original owner of a snowmobile, for a fee of $5 the DMV gave me the name and address of the previous owner.

He asked if there was a website if he could look it up on. Answer is still no - that would be a violation of privacy. As far as what you will do if you pay them, taht will vary by state. Here, they will not give you that info under any circumstance. You could call the police if you had cause and they might track it down, but they are not going to share it with you. Same as vehicle license plates.

Sure, being able to look up by just the registration number for a boat or license tag on a vehicle wouldn't be smart. Then any idiot could look up anybody who pisses him off on the road or water. However, there might be a way to look it up by the hull #.

Here, while you can't get much information for anything you don't own on a state website (DMV for vehicles, DNR for boats), you can look up the information to vehicles with the VIN and real estate with the tax map # (and look up the tax map # of any property with GIS mapping) on county websites and they will give you the owner's name and the property tax information. There's no way to look up boats on the internet here that I know of because it's handled differently than vehicles, and I guess there isn't enough demand for it. That doesn't mean that there isn't a state that offers the ability to look up information by hull #.

Here in GA you can download an excel spreadsheet with all boat registration numbers, addresses, owner's name, boat type, etc. Its public record. Its a great tool when you are doing research on a possible purchase, as it will tell you the last time the boat was registered in the state. This is, of course, pre-supposing you can get the hull numbers in the first place...

What matters is where you plan to register it.
Some states require a title even if it never had one from the other state.
It all depends on the size of the boat and your local laws.
It can get messy!

Ayuh,... In NYS, the last registered owner can file for a lost registration, which he can sign over to you,...

Re: registration numbers...

Well, I reckon it don't make much difference whether ya call it "public" or "private" anymore ...

Perfect example is Boatpix.com. Two lunatics fly around in a lil helicopter taking pics of boats. They then contact the owner via his hull# and try to sell him said pics. 2nd time they emailed me!? I can't get that info, how do they?

Anyhoo. If this free boat was last registered in '04 it shouldn't be all that big of a deal to get the paperwork straightened out. Good luck.

Ayuh,... You, can stand in line, 'n get the form to bring to him...

You can also take the filled out, 'n signed form back to the Dmv to get the registration copy, which he can sign over to you...

so you can go stand in line some more to re-register it in Yer name....
