Hi folks, just bought an old (1985) 9.9HP Evinrude outboard to put on the Oday 22.
It has as I understand it has a 6 amp charging system and is not regulated, again as I understand it.
What I don't want to do is get in a situation where I am running wide open or thereabouts, (Is that a word?) and overcharging the battery. I have read that you can sometimes boil the water right out of the battery doing that with those type charging systems. Has anyone out here run into that situation and how did you deal with it?
I have a couple of books on 12 volt electrical systems, however I thought I would throw that out here for you experts!
Thanks in advance to all.

Just ignore everything you know about overcharging and don't worry about it. It is true that it will run around 16 volts and in theory that is tough on the battery. However, in reality there are thousands of motors out there doing just that all the time with no ill effects. The majority of outboards have systems just like yours. Use a good battery and enjoy the day.

The larger the battery, the less concern.

1 Are you sure that the output is as much as 6amps?

2 Are you sure that it is fitted with a rectifier to give a DC supply for battery charging? (the Yachtwin version was as standard)

3 If you really feel the need for a regulator or discover that one is needed think about one, of a suitable rating, that is supplied for solar panels or wind generators.

4 If you connect a battery be absolutely certain you get the polarity correct or you will instantly destroy the rectifier and probably the coil.

5 Do not connect a battery at all unless you are certain the output is rectified or you will destroy the coil.
