I have 94 Mercruiser 5.0, when I go high rpms, it shows my alternator is charging over 14v, infact around 15 and 16, I know this will toast the battery, does any one know where is the regulator located on engine and if there is none, where to install one? Since not very familiar with the electronic section of boat, a step by step instruction will be helpful

Many Thanks.

Sounds like you should remove the alternator and take in to be checked. They can be serviced and generally the regulator is built into the alternator, yours may be different but I doubt it.

If the Reg is locked open it can destroy a Batt, or the Batt is bad causing the Reg to charge full.

Just may past experiance, hope it helps.

No --before you pull off the alternator why not verify that your console voltmeter is accurate. Put a voltmeter on the battery with the engine running at about 1500 rpm. 14.5 volts give or take a bit would be normal. If the handheld meter verifies the accuracy of the console meter, then let the rebuilder have a look-see.

Silvertip I did checked with voltmeter on the battery and it was showing above 14 at 1500 rpm and over 15/16 at higher rpm in water. The boat has been sitting for 8-9 years
