Regulator/ rectifier upgrade

I have a 1997 90hp TSLEAU it has an 6 amp unregulated setup. I have been thinking about upgrading to a regulator/rectifier instead of
the unregulated setup. I have read in the CDI Electronics help book that a battery makes a bad regulator and is not designed todo that.
I also have been through more rectifiers than I feel I should have. I just recently replaced the battery after 3 years. I have checked for
loose and corroded connection and have done voltage drop tests and not found no issues. Yes the battery was bad. I'm just
thinking that it could be a worth while improvement. But will it work alright with the 6 amp stator? Any thoughts would be
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Roach

Pretty sure CDI makes a regulator/rectifier combo unit to replace your rectifier-only unit. I'd have to do some research to find the number. Our host iboats probably sells them (?).

Well, the CDI catalog gets confusing, but it appears that 193-3408 regulated rectifier replaces 153-3408 unregulated rectifier. One chart says it fits 1997, another says up to 1996. But I think it is the one for your motor.

Iboats search brought up a blank on the 193-3408 number.. Give them a call.

Would the OEM that is in the parts diagram from Johnson be a suitable substitution ? I believe the OEM

# is 585195.

Thanks,

See, that's what I meant by confusing. That one (193-4204) is listed as the one for 1996-97 extra long shaft (25") motors. I don't know why a 25" would take a different unit than a 20", but that's what CDI says. It is a water cooled unit. Yours isn't, is it ??

I am sure thats right. you should be able to fit 0585195 but it is water cooled and fits on top of the crankcase in place of the water passage cover and lifting bracket.
I guess you will have to remove the flywheel to fit it.

You will also find it has one or two extra wires . The gray wire is the feed to the tachometer. the purple wire is a voltage sense wire, Not all replacements have the purple wire as they are internally sensed ( Got the purple and gray the right way round I hope!)

If there is also a black wire it is the ground
