I have a 1990 200 hp evinrude that appears to have a defective rectifier/regulator. The price on iboats is considerable less than the local shops and haven't been able to determine which of the rectifier/regulators is the correct one for my motor. Can someone give me the part number for this unit? Thanks

Joe Reeves,

I got the new part and put it on. Working fine now. The Old rectifier/regulator part number was 583266 and had an extra purple wire on one side. Looking at the old rectifier answers the question on "where the he.. is that burnt wire smell coming from?. On checking their part numbers on the computer you now use 583689. Again thanks for the quick response. Saved me lots on labor. :D

Dhadley,
Appreciate the info, I hope it doesn't burn up. Those things are $200 a pop. I did clean and tighten the connectors, but they are wing nuts. I guess I will go to town and get some locking nuts to put on there.

RetNav,

Use stainless steel nuts and lockwashers on the terminals. Sand the copper lugs and the battery connections so they shine, then seal with protectant spray.

Re: Regulator/rectifier

If the old one burned up the new one may also. Make sure the battery connections are good (no wing nuts) and clean. It may not hurt to vent the block to eliminate any possibility of trapped air in the top of the block. Those water cooled regulators dont do well unless the bottom is indeed in water.
