Does anybody have any experience testing a regulator on the bench. What sort of input (variac set to 20V?) could I use to simulate the stator coil?

You might be able to use a scope on a working system to see the sine and try to duplicate it, put me on the list for the second one.

Re: Regulator testing on the bench

Might is the key word here, because there are different types (some are ACin/ACout, some are ACin/DCout). You may have to switch back-and to with your meter from the two, but the idea of using a variac on the input to simulate a stator sure souinds like a plan. But use a circuit breaker inline on the input of the reg, just in case the regulator is chorted...Or you might end-up replacing the reg and the variac.
I got a variac, and will try that myself to troubleshoot one next time. Thanks for the brillant tip :D
Rectifiers can be checked like a set of 4 diodes.
